August interlude: “Watch the combers roll in…” — updated

The YouTube notes say, “Filmed in the ’70’s, not far from Fogarty’s Cove, Guysborough County.” It has the look of a CBC or NFB production. If anyone knows who filmed it or where it aired, reach for the comment link above.

The musicians are the late Stan Rogers, guitar; Garnet Rogers, fiddle; and Dave Eadie, electric bass.

[UPDATE] Clever detective work by an anonymous Contrarian reader traces the source of this recording to an episode of the CBC TC Variety series, “Canadian Express.” The series ran from September, 1977, to September, 1980, and featured moveable venues and changeable hosts. An episode hosted by Ryan’s Fancy, called “Songs Of The Sea,” paid tribute to sea shanties and songs of the ocean. Taped in June, 1978, it aired on January 11, 1979, with guests Stan Rogers, Valdy, Paul Hann, and Hoppe and Hogarth.

Our reader happened to be on the CBC Archives website, watching host Paul Soles interview Rogers on an episode of “Canada After Dark” in which Rogers mentions the filming. At about the 3:35 mark of the video, Rogers tells Soles:

I was up in the Chedabucto Bay area in June with a crew from CBC Newfoundland with Ryan’s Fancy. We were doing a Canadian Express thing that will be shown in January. And we actually found that there is a Fogarty’s Cove, near Fox Island—right where I placed it in the song. There was a little cove, sometimes called Indian Harbour, otherwise called Fogarty’s Cove. So we filmed “Fogarty’s Cove” in Fogarty’s Cove.
